Preserving biodiversity and fighting climate change through mangrove restoration

In keeping with its commitment to leadership in sustainability, Star is leading an ambitious effort to enhance biodiversity around its factories and offices by restoring local mangrove habitats equivalent to half of the company’s physical footprint.

In collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Department of Forest Conservation, the Sri Lankan Navy, the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society, and the University of Wayamba, STAR is working to restore mangroves across 3 hectares of the Anawilundawa Ramsar Wetland Sanctuary.

In the late 1990s, more than half of Sri Lanka’s mangroves, like Anawilundawa, were destroyed to create shrimp aquaculture farms, devastating coastal ecosystems and the communities that relied on them.

Known as “blue forests,” coastal mangrove ecosystems can store up to ten times more  CO₂ per unit area than rainforests, making them a powerful tool in the fight against climate change

Today, the Anawilundawa Wetlands stand as a vibrant sanctuary, home to over 150 bird species, 20 species of mammals, and more than 70 species of butterflies. Over half of Sri Lanka’s freshwater fish species also thrive in these waters.

Star’s commitment to restoring this vital ecosystem earned the UN Decade of World Restoration Flagship Award for Sri Lanka in 2024, highlighting the company’s ongoing dedication to sustainable innovation and ecological stewardship.

Pioneering a more agile, integrated supply chain with expansion into West Africa 

On January 18, 2025, the first Star employees began preparing for operations at the company’s newest manufacturing facility in Togo, West Africa.

This state-of-the-art facility, located in the heart of Africa’s cotton belt, is the country’s first large-scale, export-focused apparel manufacturing center. By partnering with local mills, the Togo operations will create a more integrated supply chain—from locally cultivated cotton to finished garments.

Togo offers Star and its customers an agile, duty-free manufacturing base, reducing reliance on traditional supply markets and enhancing Star’s ability to adapt to shifting global trade dynamics. With its deepwater port and proximity to major shipping routes, Togo also shortens transit times to the U.S., improving responsiveness and delivery speed.

As part of the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) Cotton-to-Textiles Value Chain Study, Star’s Togo operations aim to build an integrated regional textile supply chain across West Africa. This initiative reinforces Star’s commitment to driving process innovation and creating value in the global apparel industry.

“West Africa holds the potential to be a textile and apparel powerhouse given its substantial workforce, availability of cotton, and proximity to the largest apparel demand centers in the United States and Europe,” said Josiane Kwenda, IFC Country Manager for Togo. “IFC is proud to support Star to help support job creation, drive exports, and spur higher value manufacturing for Togo.”

The LEED-certified facility, located in the Plateforme Industrielle d’Adétikopé industrial park near Lomé, Togo, is expected to create 4,520 direct and indirect jobs, with a focus on providing economic opportunities for women.

The facility is slated to open at the end of January, with the first fabric cuttings set to begin in February.

Star earns silver award for energy
efficiency at inaugural ISGSD

In June, Star was honored at the inaugural International Symposium on Green Industry Initiative for Sustainable Industrial Development (ISGSD), earning a Silver Award in the “Energy Efficiency in Industry” category for its Innovation Center in Katunayake. This facility is the world’s first Passive House factory building, the first Passive House Design in South Asia, and the first LEED Platinum-certified building in Sri Lanka under the latest LEED V4 standards.

Hosted at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo, ISGSD 2024 was spearheaded by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Industries and Industrial Development Board. Under the theme “Go Green Industry,” the event convened industry leaders, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to advance sustainable industrial practices. The symposium featured 10 focused sessions, each addressing key aspects of green industry initiatives.

By applying Passive House principles to renovate an old factory, Star has taken an innovative approach to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. 

Star’s ESG-led approach has enabled its Innovation Centre to reduce energy consumption by up to 70%, achieving Zero kWh/m²a heating demand compared to a conventionally efficient modern industrial building of the same size. This significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs while enhancing indoor environmental quality, boosting employee productivity and occupational health.

With apparel being a major contributor to global energy emissions, Star has embraced a holistic sustainability strategy, actively managing energy and waste emissions to minimize its environmental footprint. Given that Sri Lanka is classified as a water risk country by the Aqueduct tool of the World Resources Institute, Star also conserves approximately 54 million liters of water annually through wastewater recycling and AHU drain water reuse across its facilities.

Star expands Sri Lankan operations with
acquisition of Kolonna Manufacturing

In June 2024, Star expanded its footprint with the acquisition of Kolonna Manufacturing Limited—now its 12th facility in Sri Lanka. Located in the Ratnapura district, this new site will create over 1,000 job opportunities for the local community, reinforcing Star’s commitment to the region’s growth.
